We interviewed Poonam Hemraj, lecturer in the Department of Computer Education at MIE, to learn how Kotobee supported this nationwide initiative to modernize education.

The Challenge

Tell us about yourself and the nature of your work

I am Poonam Hemraj, a lecturer in the Department of Computer Education at the Mauritius Institute of Education (MIE). My work involves digitising educational materials and finding ways to integrate the latest technologies into teaching and learning.

At MIE, I’m in charge of digitizing materials for both the Road Safety Education project (RSE) and the Early Digital Learning Programme (EDLP). The EDLP helps young students use technology confidently, while the RSE project teaches them how to stay safe through fun, interactive lessons.

What challenges did you face before using Kotobee?

Before using Kotobee, creating interactive digital resources was a real struggle. We needed something that could bring all our videos and activities together in one place, work offline for schools with limited internet, and still run smoothly on classroom tablets. Finding a tool that met all these requirements without causing any technical issues was a major challenge.

What potential solutions did you explore that didn't work out?

We looked into several digital tools and platforms that could combine our interactive activities and multimedia content. Most of these tools either required constant internet access, were too complicated for teachers and students to use, or lacked the flexibility to customise content and interactivity.

“Kotobee gave us exactly what we were looking for: a way to build interactive ebooks that work both online and offline.”

The Solution

How did you hear about Kotobee?

I came across Kotobee through online research and recommendations from colleagues. I was looking for a way to create interactive ebooks with videos, interactive activities, and quizzes that students could still use offline on their school tablets.

What drove you to choose Kotobee?

Kotobee gave us exactly what we were looking for: a way to build interactive ebooks that work both online and offline. It supports videos, audio, and interactive widgets, and its flexible export options (EPUB, SCORM, web, and mobile) make it easy to use in classrooms and at home. It proved to be the most practical and reliable solution for our project.

What made Kotobee stand out to us is the flexibility it offers in design and customization. With Kotobee Author, I can design every part of the ebook, from layouts and styles to how the videos and interactive widgets appear in the book. I can also add interactive quizzes and self-check exercises, and export the final ebook in different formats so it works on any device or platform.

What specific aspect of your ebook are you most proud of?

I’m most proud of how the ebooks we created using Kotobee make learning more engaging and accessible for our students. The interactive activities inside the books include drag-and-drop exercises, matching tasks, clickable visuals, typing activities, and audio prompts that guide learners through each step. These features make lessons more fun for young learners and help teachers keep their attention throughout the class.

Teachers have told us how much they appreciate that the ebooks work completely offline and run smoothly on school tablets. That means no one is left behind because of limited internet access.

“Since introducing the interactive ebooks created with Kotobee, teachers have noticed that students are more motivated and actively involved in the classroom.”

The Results

What metrics do you use to measure the success of your project? Has Kotobee affected those metrics in any way?

We measure success mainly through teacher and student feedback during classroom visits and training workshops, as well as by observing how learners interact with the ebooks. Since introducing the interactive ebooks created with Kotobee, teachers have noticed that students are more motivated and actively involved in the classroom. The ebooks’ interactive format has made it easier for teachers to include videos, quizzes, and other multimedia elements in their classes, which creates more effective and enjoyable learning experiences.

The Future

What are your plans for the future?

We’re excited to keep building on what we’ve started. Our next steps include:

  • Integrating our Kotobee ebooks into a Learning Management System (LMS) to make distribution easier and track learners’ progress more effectively.
  • Developing mobile app versions of the ebooks so students can access the material anytime, even outside the classroom.
  • Creating progressive learning paths where learners have to complete one activity before moving on to the next.
  • Expanding our interactive content to cover more subjects and give teachers more opportunities to use technology to create meaningful learning experiences.
